Intern Chronicles

I have been privileged with sharing what is going on in Pottawatomie County for the past nine months, but it is now coming to an end. Interning at the Countywide & Sun opened my eyes to the community around me that I had never been super involved in before. I learned the importance of local journalism and a lot about my town while I was at it.

Even though they can be long and somewhat boring, I really enjoyed attending school board and town meetings. I was able to learn firsthand what was happening around me, instead of hearing it passed around without getting the full information.

I also enjoyed getting to write about different things happening at my school. I was conditioned to “view everything as a story,” and I benefited from it so much. I was able to see just how amazing my school and town is.

Saying that I’ve grown as a writer would be an understatement. Throughout my time at the paper, I spent a lot of time revising and proof-reading before the final paper was sent to print. All of that reading helped me learn how to write like a proper journalist. I could not have done any of it without my amazing mentors, though. Julie, Natasha, and Suzie all continuously encouraged me with my writing and journalism.

I will miss being known as the “newspaper girl,” but I will always be grateful for everyone who supported me along the way. I appreciate all of you (the readers) for giving me words of encouragement when you see me around, and for listening to what I have to say. It has truly been an honor.
